Auckland's atlas record starts at the fare box. A single AT HOP smartcard has covered bus, train and ferry across the region since the rollout finished in early 2014 — reached after a false start, when the card the city launched in 2011 was dropped because its supplier could not make its equipment compliant with the central system. In November 2024 Auckland became, by Auckland Transport's account, the first New Zealand city to take contactless bank cards across all three modes; the national system meant to replace HOP has since slipped to the end of 2027.
