Smart-city projects run by civil society

23 of 871 published projects — 2.6% — operated by an NGO, foundation, cooperative or citizens' organisation.

Run by an NGO, foundation, cooperative or citizens' organisation.

The smallest group, and the one that most often survives its funders. Community mapping projects have left datasets standing years after the grant closed, because an open dataset needs nobody to keep operating it. The same property cuts the other way: what nobody has to run, nobody is responsible for acting on. Read these alongside the entries that had donor money and hardware, which stopped when the money did.

Membership here is decided by the data, not by an editor: every published entry whose recorded operator is of this kind appears below. An entry can name more than one kind of operator, so it can appear on more than one of these pages.

✔ Every published entry is checked against the public sources it cites before publication.

Each of these is the same kind of page — a slice of the atlas whose membership is decided by a field rather than by an editor.
