Smart Columbus
Columbus won the 2016 USDOT Smart City Challenge — $40m from USDOT plus $10m from Paul G. Allen's Vulcan/foundation — and spent it on connected-vehicle infrastructure, the Smart Columbus Operating System data platform (~$15.9m, 2,000+ datasets ingested) and consumer mobility tools. The results were mixed: the marquee Linden LEAP self-driving shuttle was halted in February 2020 after a rider fell during a sudden stop and NHTSA suspended the EasyMile fleet nationwide, and the Pivot trip-planning app (~$2.3m) drew only about 1,100 downloads and 447 trips while the planned common-payment system was never deployed. The USDOT demonstration wrapped up in 2021, with the city continuing the effort as a smaller innovation lab.
