Columbus, Ohio put itself on the smart-city map by winning the U.S. Department of Transportation's inaugural Smart City Challenge in 2016, beating 77 other applicant cities for a $40m federal grant plus $10m from Paul G. Allen's Vulcan. The five-year Smart Columbus program built connected-vehicle infrastructure and an open city-data operating system, but its results were mixed: a flagship Linden self-driving shuttle was halted in 2020 after a passenger was injured, and its consumer trip-planning app saw little uptake. When the federal demonstration concluded in 2021, the city kept the brand alive as a smaller innovation lab focused on renewable energy and the digital divide.
