Autopiloten: Nobina's Driverless Bus Pilot, Kista to Barkarbystaden

Nobina operated driverless electric minibuses on a Stockholm-area public transit line: a free Kista pilot from January 2018, then a scheduled SL bus route through Barkarbystaden from October 2018. A steward stayed aboard throughout, able to take manual control. SL discontinued the five-year service on 30 September 2023, citing weak ridership (~200 rides/week) and high cost.

📊 Impact

About 10,000 passengers rode the free Kista pilot in its first roughly three months (Jan–Aug 2018). By 2023, weekly ridership on the Barkarbystaden line had fallen to about 200 rides — the figure SL cited when it ended the service.

🎓 Lesson

A driverless shuttle graduating from a free pilot to five years of real scheduled public-transport service is rare — but even that isn't proof of durability: Barkarbystaden's line was cancelled for the oldest reason in transit, too few riders relative to cost, not a technology failure.
