SIATA Early Warning Network

SIATA, a regional early-warning network for the ten-municipality Valle de Aburrá, has monitored rainfall, river levels, landslide risk and air quality since 2010. Universidad EAFIT operates roughly 1,200 sensors, radars and cameras under contract with the metropolitan authority. Community alert calls have prompted real evacuations, though systemwide lives-saved figures remain unverified.

📊 Impact

In March 2022, SIATA's community alert-call network prompted residents of Medellín's El Pesebre neighborhood to evacuate as Quebrada La Iguaná rose overnight; no independent, systemwide count of alerts issued or lives saved exists.

🎓 Lesson

Sensors detecting a hazard is not the same as an agency acting on it — in January 2023 SIATA's cameras captured a fatal flash flood in real time at an underpass that was never closed.
