Manchester's best-documented smart-city chapter was a competition prize. In 2015 the city won the UK government's £10M IoT demonstrator award, and from 2016 to 2018 a 21-organisation consortium led by the city council wired one district — Oxford Road — with environmental, transport and health sensors on a shared data layer. The demonstrator ended on schedule in 2018; what it left behind is documentation rather than infrastructure, and the project's own website no longer belongs to it.

Compare with other cities
- 🇩🇰 Copenhagen: City Data Exchange The sharpest contrast to CityVerve's 'platform of platforms', which never even reached the commercialisation this one attempted.
- 🇫🇮 Helsinki: Smart Kalasatama The closest peer: an agile-piloting programme published honestly as completed when its funded term ended.
- 🇩🇪 Munich: Smarter Together Munich EU-era district demonstrator: the natural comparison for what a fixed-term funded corridor leaves behind.
- 🇬🇧 Glasgow: Glasgow Operations Centre Same funder and year: both won money from the UK's national Future Cities/smart-city demonstrator competitions.

- 🇬🇧 Bristol: Bristol Is Open — Programmable City Network Testbed The direct sibling of the same UK demonstrator cohort: Manchester's domain went to a gambling site, Bristol's company survives as a non-trading shell.
