Bangkok's Million-Tree Register
Bangkok logs every planting from its million-tree campaign in a public register. Since June 2022, district crews, companies and residents photograph each specimen, choose the species and drop a map pin — residents through the LINE account @BangkokTree — and the entries appear on a live map at tree.bangkok.go.th. The register also exposes what the headline number contains: when the city declared its first million reached on 2 July 2024, only 35 percent of the records were trees, the rest shrubs and climbers. No survival audit has been published.
📊 Impact
2,680,178 plantings registered by 26 July 2026, of which 1,551,579 are perennial trees, 946,297 shrubs and 182,302 climbers. At the 1,002,166-record milestone of 2 July 2024 the split was 35% trees, 47% shrubs, 18% climbers.
🎓 Lesson
A per-object register makes a political headline number auditable, and shows what it is made of. It also shows who does the work: of the first million records, district offices logged 804,791 and residents' communities 2,281.
