How Wiesbaden got smart
The traffic work is the largest thing here and the hardest to judge. All 227 signals on the main road network were fitted with new control and sensor technology under DIGI-V — over 400 cameras and sensors feeding an adaptive control centre — in a roughly €30M project commissioned in 2021, one of Germany's most extensive urban traffic digitalisations. The entry's own verdict is that a big-bang digitalisation delivers data first and visible congestion relief later, and that local coverage stayed sceptical about tangible benefits.
The governance layer followed and is what German cities do best. Smart City 2030 ran stakeholder workshops from 2021 to 2023 into a digitalisation strategy and a permanent smart-city unit inside the city administration, with €2.25m in state funding secured in 2021 and a further €1.74m in July 2025 for AI-focused use cases. A city digital twin is among the projects the participation process fed into.
The newest entry is deliberately small. Since 2024 a feasibility study with an aviation firm has tested drone-delivered defibrillators — an automated hangar, a UAV and an AED meant to reach outlying areas faster than an ambulance. Test flights delivered a device successfully; no permanent emergency service is deployed. It is a study, and the entry says so.

Wiesbaden is a city with funding, a strategy unit and a completed rollout, and no published measurement of what any of it changed — which is the ordinary German position rather than a local failing.
