Niamey's first entry in the atlas is its stretch of the AfDB-financed Trans-Saharan fibre backbone: an 88km urban local loop linking the city's administrative sites toward Niger's planned national data centre. The wider 1,031km network reaches toward Algeria, Chad, Nigeria and Benin and was 97% complete by November 2025 — though the data centre it is meant to feed is still being finished.

Compare with other cities
- 🇸🇪 Stockholm: Stokab: Stockholm's Municipal Open-Access Dark Fibre Network Niamey is still laying the physical backbone; Stockholm's Stokab shows the next step — leasing finished fibre to any operator since 1994.
- 🇺🇸 Chattanooga: EPB Gig City — Fiber-Optic Smart Grid & Community Broadband Different endgame for public fibre: Niamey's backbone links government sites, Chattanooga's utility fibre became a citywide gigabit ISP.
- 🇨🇫 Bangui: Sub-Riverine Fiber Connection Ring Both are AfDB/EU-financed fibre backbones from the same period — Niamey's loop feeds a planned data centre, Bangui's crosses two borders.
