Metrobus: Mexico City's BRT Network and Its Open Real-Time Feed

Mexico City opened its first bus rapid transit corridor along Avenida Insurgentes on 19 June 2005 and now runs seven lines: the city agency owns the corridors, stations and fare trusts, while private operating companies buy, run and maintain the buses. Those buses report their position by GPS into a public GTFS-Realtime feed, and a control centre opened in the Escandon district in 2023 monitors the network as cameras are fitted to buses and stations. A peer-reviewed before-and-after study on the Insurgentes corridor measured sharply lower commuter exposure to carbon monoxide, benzene and fine particles. Line 7 on Paseo de la Reforma, built with double-decker buses, was held up by court injunctions over tree felling near Chapultepec and is still criticised as a half-finished corridor.

📊 Impact

Peer-reviewed before-and-after measurements on the Insurgentes corridor found commuter exposure fell by up to 45% for CO, 54% for benzene and 30% for PM2.5, with no significant change in PM10 and shorter journeys cutting total exposure further (Wohrnschimmel et al., Atmospheric Environment, 2008). A later differences-in-differences study of monitoring-station data found the BRT reduced ambient CO, NOx and PM10 emissions (Bel & Holst, Transport Policy, 2018).

🎓 Lesson

The measured gains came from the physical swap — some 260 minibuses and 90 buses replaced by about 98 articulated vehicles on one avenue — not from the data layer, which arrived thirteen years later. Instrumenting a corridor is cheap; the emissions result was bought with the bus fleet.
