LA's LED Streetlight Retrofit & Smart Node Network

Los Angeles converted 140,000 cobra-head streetlights to LED by 2013 and 20,000 decorative ones by 2018-19, cutting lighting energy use by about 64%. A cellular smart-node layer reports outages and dims lamps remotely — but it covers 37,000 of 223,000 poles, a third of the 110,000 announced in 2015, while copper-wire theft drives a year-long repair backlog.

The Bureau of Street Lighting reports 98% of the system converted, about 64% less street-lighting energy (roughly 114 GWh and $10M a year) and about 67,000 tonnes of CO2 avoided. Self-reported; no independent evaluation of the Los Angeles programme was found.
