Dhaka Metro MRT Line 6

Dhaka's first metro, run by state-owned Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), opened to the public between Uttara North and Agargaon on 29 December 2022 and reached Motijheel in November 2023, collecting fares through contactless MRT Pass and Rapid Pass smart cards at automatic gates. DMTCL counted a record 403,164 passengers on 13 February 2025, and typical days carry roughly 350,000-400,000 riders. The ticketing layer has been the weak point: about 200,000 of 313,000 single-journey cards left the stations in riders' pockets, DMTCL stopped selling its own MRT Pass in October 2024 for lack of stock, and a QR-code single-journey system was still in procurement as of mid-2026. During the July 2024 uprising, Mirpur-10 and Kazipara stations were vandalized and closed; the repair bill itself became a political story when an initial estimate of roughly Tk 350 crore was cut to about Tk 50 crore after the government fell, and both stations reopened by 15 October 2024. Service remains capped at 12 train pairs because DMTCL lacks trained staff to run more, and the 1.16 km Kamalapur extension is now expected in January 2027.
