A town of 78,000 on the Thessalian plain, Trikala has been trading on the 'first digital city in Greece' label the economy ministry pinned on it in 2004 — and, unusually, keeps earning it. A municipal fibre and wireless network came in the mid-2000s, a telehealth centre under the municipal company e-Trikala followed in 2008, and in 2015/16 the CityMobil2 driverless minibuses made the town internationally visible, running in ordinary traffic among the first in Europe. A decade on, automated shuttles still circulate under successive EU research projects, while the city's newest instrument is its most local one: parking meters whose revenue part-pays the electricity bills of vulnerable households.
