Researchers from MIT, Columbia and the University of Nairobi rode roughly 130 matatu routes with GPS-equipped phones, then converted the data into a modified GTFS format — the first informal transit system added to Google Maps, in 2014. The open dataset is still verified and now feeds several Nairobi routing apps.
A bus rapid transit line on the Greater Cairo Ring Road whose Phase 1 (35 km, 14 stations) entered full service on 3 July 2025, running in dedicated lanes with about 100 locally manufactured electric buses. The full network is planned to reach 48 stations across three phases at a cost of roughly EGP 9.5 billion, replacing informal microbus routes along the ring road.
Bogotá's transit operator TransMilenio runs roughly 1,485 electric buses on feeder and increasingly trunk routes with dedicated charging depots — one of the largest e-bus fleets in Latin America, second only to Santiago's. A 2026 tender added 269 more zero-emission trunk buses, which the city's environment secretariat estimates will avoid about 26,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
AC Group's Tap&Go contactless card, used since 2015 across Kigali's three bus operators (and now Yaounde too), has powered 298 million+ journeys and serves 670,000+ daily users, helping operators recover 30-40% of previously lost fare revenue.
Lagos's Cowry Card lets commuters tap to pay contactless fares across BRT buses, the Blue Line rail and LAGFERRY boats. Transit authority LAMATA made the card the only accepted fare payment on BRT routes from February 2021, and operator Touch and Pay later extended it to the metro rail lines that opened from 2023.
Launched in July 2025, the Liberia Revenue Authority's Integrated Orange Mobile Money Platform (with Orange Liberia and Ecobank) links Orange Money to the national LITAS tax system. Taxpayers dial a USSD code to pay taxes and fees for 18 government ministries and agencies from any phone with no internet, receiving an official LRA receipt by SMS within seconds.
The DRC launched RDC-Pass, a national biometric digital ID, at a June 2026 state ceremony in Kinshasa, where phased rollout begins. Valued at $97.1m under a 20-year public-private partnership with Trident Digital Tech, it gives citizens free digital IDs linked to SIM registration, single-login e-government access, and e-KYC financial services.
IluminaSP, São Paulo's public-lighting PPP, replaced 500,000+ streetlights with remotely managed LEDs in under three years — two years ahead of contract. LED points now cover about 90% of the city's lighting stock, cutting energy use over 50% and, per the operator, saving R$120 million in 2023.
