Alibaba's AI platform ingests city-wide camera and GPS data to retime traffic signals and clear paths for emergency vehicles. Now in its third generation (2025), it has grown from traffic control into a broader urban-governance system for one of China's biggest cities.
Born at Carnegie Mellon: decentralised AI traffic lights that negotiate with neighbours in real time, each optimising its own intersection. In CMU's East Liberty pilot they cut travel times ~25% and idling over 40%. Around 50 Pittsburgh intersections run it today; the tech, commercialised as Surtrac, was acquired by Miovision in 2023.
Buenos Aires put city hall into WhatsApp: the AI chatbot Boti handles millions of conversations a month, from renewing licences to booking vaccinations. In 2024 it moved to generative AI (GPT-4o) for natural-language replies.
Darmstadt links its roughly 180 traffic lights over a city fibre network, feeding camera and loop data to a central computer that adapts signal timing in real time. With operator Yunex Traffic it added a 'green wave' assistant (Signal2X app, live since 2023) to smooth traffic flow and cut stop-and-go emissions.
Offenbach was among the pilot authorities for an AI add-on to the nationwide 'Aufenthalt Digital' online residence-permit service, which checks whether uploaded documents match what's required and flags gaps before submission. Piloted from early 2026 alongside Leipzig, Lörrach, Hildesheim, Fürth, Dachau district and the Hannover region; the feature went nationwide in mid-2026.
Digital Dubai is the emirate's smart-government umbrella — launched as Smart Dubai in 2014, rebranded in 2021. Its DubaiNow app now bundles about 370 government and private services from 50+ entities into one platform, and an AI Lab followed in 2017.
